    1. Too bad, maybe next time [the spelling is correct]. I managed to master 'evet' as well [opposite of yok] and few other words, like merhaba & their fav. drink: çay, served in little glasses with no handles, so I burned myself a few times.

    2. Before I was born.
    3. Must have been a fascinating trip as well, but a place I'll likely never visit for various reasons.

edit: I forgot to mention that no, it was not a 'personal observation', purely a language thing.

    in Turkish = yok
    in Arabic = la

Very different, but they both know basic words each use [Arabic vs Turkish], especially given the geographical location.

Next book on my list: Topaz - by Leon Uris.

Na'am, (or aiwa), the opposite of la.......(As well as Syria/Iraq, etc, I spent over 7 years in the Magic Kingdom of Saudi Arabia).

Drank a lot of hot sweet 'shay' out of glasses in Syria.......little, males only, tea shops.......was in Aleppo when the then President of Iraq visited...after the parade we all adjourned to a shay shop...guy commandeered an adjoining table by dropping his automatic weapon on it.....the thing bounced around on the table top as we sat rooted.

Topaz.....probably read it before you were born, too. LOL.

    1. I would pronounce it as 'chay' [like Chile sound].
    2. I hardly doubt that.

How did you survive 7 years in the KSA? So, you must be fluent in Arabic then. The weather would have killed me the 1st year.

Any knowledge of Hebrew/Persian to go along with your Arabic & Turkish?

    Ma'asalama.

It always sounded to me like 'chi', but not pronounced like the Greek alphabet Chi.......more like the lead in to Chinese.

Arabic: Naah... Imshi was perhaps the first word I learned, but in Saudi I dealt almost exclusively with Canadians so all I have are a few random, disconnected words......although I do still say Insh'allah LOL.

Weather: Riyadh, hot and dry, I liked it......either coast Dhahran or Jiddah not so much, quite enervating in the summer.

Hebrew & Farsi....can't think of any, although I smiled to see the 'Shway Shway' (sic), "Take it easy" hand gesture used in Israel after seeing it so often in Saudi.

How to Avoid Huge Ships. I don't think you can buy the book, but you can amuse yourself for a few hours by reading the reviews on Amazon:

Funny reviews. I am going on a cruise next week. I hope the captain has read it.
