    Frankenstorm News

    A few days ago, I never heard of Hurricane Sandy..........and now they are talking about a storm that is "Biblical".

    It has been compared to the Perfect Storm.

    It's beginning to look like this storm may be even more perfect than "The Perfect Storm". In fact, some forecast models are suggesting that it may rival the Columbus Day Storm as the strongest extra-tropical cyclone to strike the lower 48 states in the last century.

    Here's a good blog with detailed analysis of the situation: http://cliffmass.blogspot.ca/2012/10...ll-strike.html

    Not to get too carried away, he does caution that there is high degree of uncertainty still. The storm may stay out to sea, but it will be impressive nonetheless.

    When storm experts say they have never seen anything like it.......or have no words to describe the damage it could do.......it gets my attention.

    These are some quotes...........

    “MODELS SHOW PRESSURE WELL BEYOND WHAT HAS EVER BEEN OBSERVED NEAR THE NJ/NY COAST (EVEN EXCEEDING THE 1938 LONG ISLAND EXPRESS [HURRICANE])”, writes NOAA’s Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (HPC).

    "The upper-air steering pattern that is part of the puzzle is not all that unheard of. It happens when the atmosphere gets blocked over the Atlantic and the flow over the U.S. doubles back on itself. Sometimes big winter storms are involved.

    The freak part is that a hurricane happens to be in the right place in the world to get sucked into this doubled-back channel of air and pulled inland from the coast.

    And the double-freak part is that the upper level wind, instead of weakening the storm and simply absorbing the moisture - which would be annoying enough - is merging with the tropical system to create a monstrous hybrid vortex. A combination of a hurricane and a nor’easter.

    A simpler explanation: the clash of the cold blast from the continental U.S. and the massive surge of warm, moist air from Hurricane Sandy will cause the storm to explode and the pressure to crash.

    Let's hope they are wrong........or the storm veers off to sea.

    Perfect storm? Nobody knows that for sure..it's all speculation until it actually happens.

    However, the 7.7 earthquake off the coast of BC, yesterday and the tidal wave that resulted (although not high enough to do any really damage to Hawaii and coast of BC) has happened,
    and nobody predicted that one.

    I wonder if I should sell any stocks before it hits? Just recently bought a large amount (to me) of MCD, any kind of major McDonalds facility on the east coast that could be devastated by this storm?

    Canadians who may be affected...........Southern Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritime Provinces are advised to make sure they have water, food, batteries, candles, all their prescriptions, gas for the car, and a first aid kit stocked up.

    The scenario may involve 100 kmh sustained winds and torrential rain for an extended period of time, which could lead to flooding, trees being uprooted and fallen branches, which could cause hydro interruptions.

    Also.........put away anything outside that can be blown around by the wind.

    Better safe than sorry.....................just in case.

    What about Eastern Ontario?
    The weather channel only shows light rain for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and clearing by Friday,
    No mention of torrential rain, but if Sandy hits landfall tomorrow as expected, it will be the Eastern Seaboard that could catch
    the brunt of the storm.

    http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/10...-frankenstorm/

    <quote from news article>
    Southern and eastern Ontario could see between 50 and 100 millimetres late Monday and early Tuesday.
    <endquote>
    50mm = 5 cm = about 2 inches of rain..that's a lot in a short time and if it's closer to 100 that's 10 cm or about 4 inches of rain coming down in a 24 to 48
    hr period..almost biblical proportions for us here in Ontario. Certainly there will be lots of flooding in any low lying areas in Ottawa, Montreal etc.

    A couple inches of rain over a few hours is stuff we've experienced before.
