Xiu etf
Could someone tell me if they know why the fund XIU on the TSX, is not eligble for a TFSA or an RESP? Or whether I am misinformed and it is actually eligible for these investment vehicle?

It's more likely that your account does not allow the trading of individual equities like XIU.

XIU is the biggest ETF in Canada, and most definitely TFSA and RESP eligible. You didn't mention where you have your account--FT is right, your account is probably configured to not allow you to buy it.
With Questrade, I once had to ask them to authorize a particular ETF for registered accounts.

If your account is a Mutual Fund only account (like with my wife's was with TD asset management), then they can't "buy" any stock or ETF. You need to have your account with the discount brokerage side (TD Waterhouse in our case). You can have the assets transferred "in kind" from one account to the other. (but be careful with the TFSA, I've heard horror stories about the Government deeming a transfer as a new deposit, then you get penalized for over contributing)

Hi Guys
Thanks for the replies. I am with ScotiaiTrade. I think that I can make that trade. The reason I thought that maybe I couldn't was because when I looked at the ishares website, under trading information, other etf's have indicated TFSA, RESP eligible, however the XIU fund only says RSP. Thanks for all of the info.
