RDSP + TFSA: how should I setup this portfolio?

Okay I'm in the process of setting up an RDSP and I already have TFSA, which is just a HISA. Now I'll have around 20k in my RDSP after the goverment grants this year, and there's another 20k in my TFSA. I'm new to investing, but I know it's not smart to leave this much in a savings account.

I've skimmed through TD e-series, but I'd like broader diversification. I also checked out the complete couch potato on the CCP site, but I'd rather just stick to a single currency and avoid the conversion fees. Can someone post a simple portfolio of ETFs that I can setup for these two accounts and then just keep contributing every year.

I'll probably be contributing 5k w/grants into the RDSP, plus another 5K in the TFSA every year.

What do you mean when you say you want broader diversification than the TD e-series?

I wish that eseries had a strict emerging mks fund for example. It gets lumped in with International fund.

And when you mention grants, are you still a student? Do you foresee needing any of the TFSA $ in the near future?

Your choice of the word "diversification" had us confused. It isn't "broader diversification" you are looking for, because e-series index funds are broadly diversified within their asset classes. Rather you are looking for a "broader choice" of non-diversified funds that would enable you to focus on sectors of your own choosing.

I'm looking for a portfolio that has stocks, bonds, and perhaps reits. Should I take more risk, when investing for the long term? Perhaps invest in value or small cap etfs? What if I were to split 40k 6 ways in the Vanguard Canada ETFs, would that be a decent portfolio?

I looked up a few sample portfolios online, but most are tailored towards American investors.

Yes it would but you might want to add ZRE and XRB for further diversification.
