I've gotten two jobs by sending unsolicited resumes to companies I wanted to work for even though they had no jobs advertised.
In the first case, I sent out about 300 unsolicited resumes to companies and organizations that looked interesting to me, and I heard back from two of them. That's actually a pretty good response rate. Of the two that responded, I went in for interviews and I got a job at one of them.
In the second case I just happened to learn about an organization whose mission exactly matched my interests and experience, so I sent them my resume. They contacted me immediately, because someone had just given their notice and based on my resume they thought I might be a good fit. That was the best job I ever had.
The bizarre thing about both of these jobs was that in both cases the employee who previously held my position was named Pam.
So you could maybe look around for companies that employ pharmaceutical biotechnolgists named Pam and try those first.
