I think a will is very important and in going through the process we learned a lot. We used a lawyer. But, we bought the do it yourself will kit so we could understand the process and be well prepared when we worked with the lawyer. That was five years ago. We are about review and update it again.
The second issue is to understand how to avoid Probate taxes and fees. Not an issue for us in Alberta (I think the max fee is about $135) but a number of Provinces apply a tax to the Probate process and this tax can be significant. My parents saved us a fair amount of money and grief by having a proper will, powers of attorney, and being thoughful when deciding how to set up bank accounts, term deposits etc (so as to avoid most of the probate fees). This made the post death process much easier on the family and we were able to Probate the will without engaging a lawyer. We did of course have to pay the BC Probate tax on some monies. The bank would not release any funds to the estate until such time as we had completed this process.
