Some here were quick to judge the murder of 66 year old Sarah Halimi an anti-semitic Muslim extremist attack. However authorities are still undecided about the motivation.

    http://www.timesofisrael.com/memoria...stions-linger/

A suspect was arrested Wednesday, but authorities have not yet declared whether the murder was racially motivated and community leaders have cautioned against reaching early conclusions.

    ............

Halimi was found dead on the street in front of her apartment on Monday in the crime-ridden 11th district of the French capital. Her 27-year-old neighbor, reported by Israel Radio to be Muslim, was later arrested in connection with her death. He has been sent for psychiatric evaluation, according to reports. Relatives of Halimi said that she had previously experienced anti-Semitic harassment by a relative of the man under arrest. The woman was beaten before she fell from the third floor, Israel Radio also reported.

French police have not classified the woman’s death as a hate crime, but the family of the 66-year-old Jewish doctor asserted that the killing was nationalistically motivated.

The French Jewish community umbrella organization CRIF, however, said in a Friday statement that there was “no information to suggest the murder was an anti-Semitic attack” and cautioned people against spreading rumors online.

French parliamentarian Meyer Habib has called on state authorities to investigate the crime as an anti-Semitic attack, though. In a lengthy Facebook post, he said the suspect had routinely harassed Halimi, calling her and her daughter “dirty Jews.”

Given Islam's unequivocal attitude towards Jews and their extermination (makes Nazism seem ambivalent), it would be remarkable indeed if religious beliefs were not a factor.

    That's not right.

First of all, Nazism was the most extreme and murderous form of antisemitism, period.

Islamic world varied in its attitudes to Jews and other dhimmis, depending on when and where the events took place. At the time when most of Christian Europe was exterminating Jews in the Middle Ages, Muslim countries discriminated but didn't murder. Blood libel and other religious traditions of this type only made their way into Muslim world in the 19th century, after losing popularity in Europe.

Nor would I call what happened to the Jews of Muslim countries "extermination". Most managed to escape although some were murdered and almost all were robbed.

I do agree that given the level of antisemitism among Muslims, the regularity of Antisemitic murderous attacks by Muslims in France and the very specific statements by the family of the murdered elderly doctor, religious and cultural background of the murderer was more than a coincidence.

There seems to be a lynch mob mentality on the internet. In our Western legal system there is a finding of not guilty by reason of insanity.
For example John Hinckley Jr., who shot President Reagan:

The shooter was 30-year old John Hinckley. Hinckley said that he wanted to shoot President Reagan to impress actress Jodie Foster.[9] He planned the assassination after he saw the movie Taxi Driver and there was a scene similar to the event.[10]

Hinckley decided to copy DeNiro's character in the movie. He began to stalk President Jimmy Carter. He was surprised at how easy it was to get close to the president—only one foot away at one event. He was arrested in October 1980 at Nashville International Airport for illegal possession of firearms. Even though Carter made a campaign stop there, the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not connect this arrest to the President and did not tell the United States Secret Service.[11]

He wrote three or four more notes to Foster in early March 1981. Foster gave these notes to her dean, who gave them to the Yale police department. After this, the police wanted to find Hinckley, but failed.[12][13] Hinckley soon moved to Washington, D.C. to carry-out his assassination plan.

    .............

Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity on June 21, 1982. The defense psychiatric reports had found him to be insane[14] while the prosecution reports declared him legally sane.[15][16]

Following his lawyers' advice, he declined to take the stand in his own defense.[17] Hinckley was confined at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C.. He was released in 2016.
We really don't know much about the killer who was taken to a psychiatric hospital after the killing .

And yet now there is a thriving Jewish community in Germany.

Welcome to the Fastest-growing Jewish Community in the World: Germany

For 10-year-old Rafael Seligmann, leaving Israel for Germany in 1957 was a trauma, but for his parents it was a return to the homeland they had fled 20 years earlier. Today, Seligmann, 65, a successful journalist and novelist, is a firm believer in the rebirth of German-Jewish life, and has just launched a new quarterly, Jewish Voice from Germany, with the hope of helping the new generation of Jews there.
Seligmann emerged in the German public consciousness in the 1970s through his articles in leading publications such as Der
Spiegel, Bild, Die Welt and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He also published six novels - his first, "Rubenstein's Auction" (1988 ), was recognized as the first German novel written by a Jew after the Second World War.

    .....................

Some 100,000 Jews are registered within the community, even though the number of Jews in Germany is probably more than double that. Seligmann believes that if one counts the Israelis living in Berlin and other cities, and the Russian and American Jews living in Germany but not active in the community, the number is somewhere around a quarter of a million - roughly half the number of Jews that lived in Germany before the war.

Can't be easy to get by on a single brain cell. And yet now there is a thriving community of such individuals in the CMF.

Big difference for the Jews between "was" and "now", so not sure the point being made wraphter.

Not only was Germany the epicenter of the Holocaust, but now of the refugee crisis - at least for now, Merkel’s refugee policies remain popular—a fact that some attribute in part to memory of the Holocaust and World War II. https://www.theatlantic.com/internat...asylum/405058/

^ Got it now. But sometimes the past, and lessons from it, can't and shouldn't be forgotten.
