Furniture shopping, oh my!

So, the wife wants a couch for the family room. Okay we know what we want based on internet shopping etc. narrow it down to a piece of lazy boy and a palliser piece. We currently have a palliser recliner couch and some lazy boy chairs and we find the lazy boys more comfy and better wearing so we lean that way.

We went to the token lazyboy store, found the sofa we wanted, their floor price $2399. We thought about for a bit and went back to check out different fabric choices. Found a fabric we liked and got a quote, $3019. Yikes! They tell me they are having a sale next Saturday come in and I could get 15% off, do about $2600 + tax ... Sure.

Feeling a little frustrated at the price we keep looking. Find a palliser we like and get a quote for $2300.


Then we find this store 20 min from our house just north of Ottawa. Small town store carries palliser and lazyboy! Great.

So we take a drive, talk to them and they are very friendly, prices include delivery and setup and they also service if there is a problem. So we get quotes,the palliser come out to $2100, not bad that's a little savings, but we really like the lazyboy. So we get a quote for the standard fabric ... $1699! What! That is a $700 savings.

So we ask for the quote on the custom fabric, which remember was $500 more than the standard fabric in the lazyboy store. At this point I am figuring we may be able to get the sofa we really want for about $2100. $200 less than the standard sofa in town for custom!

Then they proceed to blow my mind, the custom fabric on hat sofa will be $1799! What? Sold!

That is laughable! Never see me shop at the lazyboy store again!

Great story about shopping around and taking your time!

I went through a roughly similar thing last fall when I wanted a new couch to replace the old one I had since '99. It was time for a chance. Had to do a lot of driving around to find one I liked at a good price but I finally did and am still enjoying that couch today.

It pays to shop around.

Being a woodworker, I just shudder at the thought of buying new furniture.

The best furniture bargains are in the antique stores. A 100 year old piece for $1000 will still be around in another 100 years. You don't have $5000 of your time in it if you make it yourself, and it isn't in the garbage inside a decade if it is purchased new.

Our main couch set came from my wife's grandparents via another relative. Built like a tank and almost as heavy. It is about 70 years old and has been reupholstered at least twice, most recently 12 years ago.

My best tip for evaluating furniture is to examine the drawers (on pieces that have drawers of course, this doesn't help for couchs). If they have dovetail joints, then the piece almost certainly has chances even if you don't have the technical knowhow to evaluate anything else about it.

That's a pretty insane mark-up on the custom fabric too.

same here, looking for decent quality furnitures at very best prices, so far I have been scanning redfladdeals.com forums and will see where it will take us, I will be buying mine later on this year.
