    Quebec Heavy Vehicle Quiz 2

Which brake would you use first in the event of a trailer breakaway?
    a. Emergency brake
    b. Disc brake
    c. Service brake
    d. Parking brake

The correct answer is "a". but why not "c"? Can anyone explain, please?

I'd use the Jake Brake because it makes a cool noise.

Brake? I'd keep driving as fast and as far from that sucker as I could!

Very simple. If you have a breakaway, you've lost control over any braking, and the e-brakes apply automatically. Service brakes require air pressure from the tractor. If you're not talking about big rigs, then the same principle applies to your SUV and little utility trailer behind you. If you have a breakaway, then you can't supply any electric charge from the SUV to the trailer service brakes.

As much as I understand. Trailer Breakaway mean that trailer detach from tractor during transport. What I can do is to stop tractor using service brake. Nothing I can do with trailer. Right?

I grew up in Quebec and learned to drive there. Know about the accelerator and the horn but not much about the brake!
