It is probably a good idea to start a new thread due to the new developments, as it appears it will be a big story.

It started out with a US website claiming they had a picture and video of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack with a group of people.

The story claimed that other high profile Canadians also bought drugs from the same dealers.

The story broke when someone wanted to sell the video for 100,000 to a news source. They were offered 40,000 from a Canadian news agency but turned it down.

The Toronto Star had 2 reporters view the tape 3 times and have confirmed that it is Rob Ford. Details are in the story.

Apparently, Ford's lawyer has spoken out..........and is not denying that is Ford, but claiming it isn't apparent what he is doing on the video.

We will see if that is true, but from the story in the Toronto Star, Ford's comments regarding racial minorities, and Justin Trudeau.......may be bad enough on their own.

I wonder who is losing sleep tonight worrying if their name is going to come up?

http://www.thestar.com/news/city_hal...o_scandal.html

First of all, I'll admit that I'm not a really big sports fan and perhaps this is part of the reason I don't get this. I was a Vancouver fan when I lived in Vancouver but now that I'm in Ottawa it only seems to make sense to cheer for Ottawa. However, in both cities I noticed a lot of Leaf or Canadiens jerseys during playofff time. At my office several people proudly wore their Canadien's shirts while Ottawa was (thumping) playing them.

Why do people continue to be Montreal or Toronto supporters when they've put down roots in Ottawa or Vancouver? Sure I understand the heritage significance of these teams but the days of Belliveau and Richard are long gone. This new set of guys could be anywhere depending on the luck of the trade or draft pools. As Jerry Seinfeld says, "When it comes down to it we are cheering for laundry". What's the deal with cheering for other cities than your own?

just wondering if the following is a waste management tradition across canada or what.

in my district one drives the truck, the other runs beside & picks up.

the runners are dressed like moonwalkers. They wear neon orange, red, yellow, chartreuse green, turquoise blue from the tops of their heads to the tips of their gloved fingers to their boots.

even their faces are totally covered with bright coloured scarves over mouths & noses, outsized dark goggles, knitted tuques & hoods pulled down low to the eyebrows.

the only reason i can tell the costumes are not personal idiosyncrasies is the runners change size each year, so i know it's not the same person.

this year my street is honoured with an exceptionally pleasant moonwalker whose voice startles me every time he speaks, since he looks like a large windup toy. It's the voice of an intelligent graduate student. Last week i was out pruning shrubs on the front lawn. Running by, dressed in neon orange & red spandex, the spaceman seized our tiny garbage bag & gestured to the shrub prunings. Would you like to throw these out ma'am, he asked, as politely as Kensington Palace.

I believe this is the case for Canada simply because all the stimulative cash has been dumped into mortgages as opposed to stimulating demand throughout the economy as it should. This article, however, is interesting and talks about the 'external costs' associated with home ownership. If it's to be believed (it seems to be fairly pursuasive) it certainly doesn't bode well for the Canadian economy at 70% home ownership:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/10/bu...t.html?hp&_r=1

Also, if garth is right on this one - get ready for the Toronto & Vancouver markets to get killed this coming year.

I'm gonna graduate from university! I've had this one course that's been holding me back for the past year that I just found out I got a 70 in! It's pretty sad, but it took me THREE extra years to finish school. I switched majors halfway through, failed a bunch of courses, and pretty much took the most convoluted, irresponsible route imaginable - But I did it!!

Six months ago I really didn't think I was gonna be able to make it. I was living in my parent's house, had no job, no degree and my networth had just slipped into the negatives for the first time in my life. I was getting pretty depressed.

Then I got a 6 figure job offer out of the blue, just finished this last course, moved to a new city and am finally able to start my life!

Anyways, just thought I'd share here - I'm pretty happy :) My adult-life money diary will be coming in the next couple weeks! And I can now start participating in the CMF as a real person with real income and not as a procrastinating student playing with 10k in the stock market when he should have been studying instead; like I have been for the past 3 years haha.

Interesting news article hosted by Neil McDonald on CBC tonight (Monday) - not sure who saw it - but I found it quite sobering. The article shone light on the extend to which central bankers are punishing savers (like me!)
Makes me want to go hide under my bed with respect to the future, but then I saw what people in Greece and Cyprus are contending with..(yikes!).
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2...ft-savers.html
One individual (the guy with the Biiiggg yacht) suggested that there isn't just one "Bubble" (ie: stock market, home values in parts of Canada etc) due to artifically low interest rates - but many! and when one pops, well....long way down.
Is this just shock journalism by the CBC - (I sure hope so!)

I have a favour to ask. Here's the background: I've mentioned in the past that my daughter is an Irish Dance teacher and one of her students, Fred Nguyen, has won the Western Canadian Championships eight times, won the North Americans twice, and placed second in the World Championships on two occasions. Freddy is almost like a member of our family (he calls me Grandma!); as the son of immigrants from Vietnam, he has worked very, very hard to accomplish what he has and he's not only an incredible dancer, he's a very impressive, responsible, and loveable young man.

The Irish Dance show, River Dance, ended its 20-year-run last year, and its producers are planning a completely new show, to open in Dublin later this year. They have invited dancers to submit videos for the first stage of an audition process, and the public can vote on their choice of the best dancers. The theme of the show will be a fusion of Irish and Afro-Cuban dance, so my daughter and Freddy put together a video on that theme, assisted by an Afro-Cuban percussionist friend of my daughters, Israel (Toto) Berriel. What I am asking is that any of you who might want to help have a look at the video and, if you like what you see, vote for Freddy. You just vote once so it won't be a big burden (although it's within the rules to vote from any number of different devices, if you wish.) Here's the link: http://talentsearch.heartbeatofhome....o/fred-nguyen/

Thank you so much for considering my request. Even a few votes could make the difference.
